The Basic Idea of Role Playing

The basic idea of most role playing games (RPGs) is:

1. There is a gamemaster and one or more players.
2. Each player plays a character (or characters). The characters are defined either (a) by their players or (b) by the application of a set of rules involving die rolls & the like or (c) by some combination of these.
3. The players decide what their characters do or at least what they try to do.
4. The gamemaster determines the result of their actions - out of his or her head or by some set of rules.
