Some companies now charge the requesting company to verify employment of former employees. What's next?
ring, ring
John: Hello.
them: This is James Knot calling from the Human Resources Profit Center of Acme Electric. Is this John Deer, former employee of Acme Electric?
John: Yes, that's me. What can I do for you?
them: Nothing. But we may be able to do something for you, if you pay us enough.
John: I have no idea what you're talking about.
them: Well, someone has called us to verify that you were an employee here. What's your bid to have us do the work to verify you were employed here?
John: You want me to pay you to simply verify I was employed there?
them: No, no. You only need pay, if you have a winning bid and you only need bid if you want us to verify your employment here. What we do concerning this matter is up to you. Our aim is to serve you.
John: This is ridiculous.
them: That's not a well formed answer to the question I asked. What's needed here is a dollar amount.
John: Ah, a dollar amount. How about minus $10,000?
them: No that won't do. The number needs to be positive.
John: Trust me on this, minus $10,000 is a well-formed answer to your question.
them: No. A minus amount makes no sense here.
John: Hm, it makes sense to me. I should be paid for having anything whatsoever to do with you scum bags. But, it's your question. Whatever you say. ... Oh, I just noticed you have gone over your allotment of time for this subject. My price for continuing this conversation is $10,000. Say anything at all to continue.
