Octagon in Blue

"the octagon
brought a gift
from another galaxy"

Millions of years ago in the time of the dinosaurs, a dark blue octagon appeared in the sky above the Tyranosaurus Rex's and other dinosaurs. The octagon was not a dinosaur, nor a reptile about to turn into a bird. The octagon was a space bird come from another galaxy by way of a space warp.

One of the Brontosaurus' looked over its shoulder and saw the octagon -- dark blue within the pale autumn sky. Most of the dinosaurs didn't notice the octagon at all. They merely ate from the ocean or fought with other dinosaurs for food.

The octagon spiraled through the sky as if thrown by some invisible hand in the sky and landed in the snow at the top of Mount Shasta in California. The octagon brought a gift from another galaxy -- a gift of seeds -- seeds of the earth and seeds of the mind.

The seeds of the earth were the seeds of the mountain wild flowers and they were blown from mountain to mountain by a great wind. And that is where the beautiful flowers of the Cascade mountains of California came from.

The seeds of the mind were strange, exciting subtle vibrations, which were thoughts, and they have been in the California air ever since. That is why, even today, people in California have unusual ideas and do weird and colorful things.

Only a few years ago there were some pale purple spreading phlox flowers, descended from these seeds, growing in a pot in someone's house. The someones had brought the phlox home with them from a trip to the mountains.

But the phlox weren't growing to well, and so one day they put the pot all the way in the of the yard to get it out of the way. A falling limb eventually broke through the pot and over the years the phlox spread under the back yard fence into an open field where no one ever went. After some years, the phlox covered the whole field. The field was cut off from people because it was at the back of a fenced in yard and there were large trees and a pond cutting it off on the other sides.

A lot of birds and bees visited the phlox field and played among the green leaves and the small 5-petaled purple flowers. But no people ever saw them.

Then one day a little boy and a little girl climbed over the fence on the little boy's birthday. They saw and talked to the phlox. And as the sun started to go down and they were getting ready to say goodbye to the phlox, a strange thing happened. A dark blue frisbee came flying over the fence and landed on the grass between them.

There was a wonderful silence and you could hear the wind in the pines by the lake. They played frisbee every day after that. The phlox flowers filled their minds as they danced beneath the soaring frisbee.
