about the "Art by the Grand Lake" Exhibit

Purpose

The "Art by the Grand Lake" Exhibit is intended as an acknowledgement and celebration of art and artists of the Grand Lake area in Oakland, California. The Lake referred to is Lake Merritt, a large beautiful lake that on one side borders downtown Oakland. The focus is on visual art (i.e. painting, drawing, photography, graphic art) and visual artists. Our wish is that viewing the exhibit will encourage you to explore more deeply the art and artists in the Grand Lake area and/or elsewhere in your life.

Content

The exhibit focuses on the works of two artists: Miron Murcury and Peter Lee. For each, the exhibit includes representations of something the artist is well know for: photos of the Grand Lake Theatre by Miron Murcury and murals by Peter Lee. Originally, some animations by Clare Puskarczyk were also included but Clare moved out of the area in 2005.

Limitations

Please note what is shown here is re-presentations. That is, what appears here is:

  • low resolution versions of selected photos of the Grand Lake Theatre from Miron Murcury's 1999 CD. In some cases these images have been trimmed.
  • low resolution versions of selected photos from Peter Lee's portfolio of his murals. In some cases these images have been trimmed.

Each of the artists shown works in several media, not just the one shown. Moreover, there are many other artists in the area. And there are many other art forms worth exploring in the area, for example, poetry and architecture. And there is an abundance of natural beauty available in the area, for example, the lake itself and the parks next to it.
